Diagnoplex’s CEO and founder Stavros Therianos developed the molecular platform that is at the basis of the company’s programs during his tenure at the University of Rochester, NY. The platform relies on a new generation of quantitative PCR, polymerase chain reaction, that allows the absolute quantification of numerous biological targets processed in parallel and from minute amounts of blood samples. Diagnoplex holds the exclusive worldwide rights on the platform.
Diagnoplex’s platform can be used to develop a wide range of different tests. Indeed, several monitoring tests for cancer recurrence and validation tests applied to the pharmacogenomics field are in progress. These tests represent additional business opportunities for the company.
Platform
The name of the molecular platform is the “single-channel quantitative multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction” (scqmRT-PCR). This technology provides the same copy number quantification of gene products called mRNAs, messenger ribonucleic acids, as obtained with real-time RT-PCR. But importantly and differently, by applying a totally different strategy, this new PCR technology overcomes the limit of previous multiplex methods by considerably increasing the number of gene products studied. Using scqmRT-PCR, it is possible to routinely quantify in parallel as many as 60 gene products. Current technologies allow amplifying, in difficult conditions, 4-5 gene products at a time. The uniformity, sensitivity, and specificity of scqmRT-PCR are equivalent to that of single gene product amplification performed by real-time PCR.
